INTRODUCTION TO THE ISLAND OF OAHU^
^
Oahu is not the largest of the Hawaiian islands-it is third largest in
size. And yet, of a total state population of just more than 1 million, 80
percent of the people live on Oahu. And just about that same
percentage of the six million tourists who visit Hawaii each year spend
their time on Oahu's beaches, in its hotels and restaurants and at its
golf courses. Its appeal is diverse. From Waikiki Beach to the Bernice
Pauahi Bishop Museum to the Arizona Memorial, Oahu offers its
visitors a wide spectrum of activities and diversions.^
^
But to the resident, Oahu is a different animal. Not so far from the
world's fantasy of swaying palms and tropical moonlit nights-which
those who "live Hawaii" would be crazy not to enjoy-is the fact that
Honolulu is fast developing a reputation as an important hub for
business in the Pacific Rim.^
^
A multilingual population, a busy foreign trade zone, profitable
investment opportunities and a fortunate geographic location,
squarely in the middle of the Pacific, make Oahu's business
environment a dynamic convergence of east and west.^
^
As a golfing island, though, it is not the best. It is near impossible to
get a tee time on any of the five municipal courses. The military's nine
courses are generally restricted, as are the four private clubs. The
public and resort courses are probably your best bet for a tee time, and
even there it can sometimes be difficult because many courses cater to large groups.^
^
Build a few more courses, you say? Many are on the drawing boards,
but it remains to be seen how many actually get built and what the
public access to them will be. Golf course development on Oahu,
particularly on agricultural land, is a highly charged and controversial
topic (see Golf Course Development in Hawaii, A Look Ahead)
despite the obvious demand.^
^
Still, with a little persistence and a lot of advance phone calling, you
can enjoy a golfing holiday on Oahu. And, if there are non-golfing
members of the family, there's plenty for them to do, too.
